Hidenwood Presbyterian Church had its beginnings over forty years ago. The Presbytery of Norfolk voted on July 20, 1954 to organize the Hidenwood Presbyterian Outpost in response to a petition from 90 prospective members. The newly formed church called the Rev. James I. Lowry Jr. to become its organizing pastor. There were 95 charter members of the congregation.
On October 9th, 1955 ground was broken on 2 acres of land for construction
of a chapel and educational buildings. The first services were held in the
chapel on September 2nd, 1956. The growth of the congregation required
that two morning services be held to accommodate all the worshipers.
By April of 1958 the congregation had grown to the extent that Hidenwood Elementary school across the street hosted worship and some Sunday school classes.
1960 saw the addition of a fellowship hall and additional classroom spaces. Four years later our current 2 story educational wing was constructed which also hosts Hidenwood's preschool program
In 1978 the sanctuary was built. It featured flexible seating for a choir
and over 400 worshipers.
A removable back wall panel allowed for overflow seating out into the narthex.
In 1992 a capital improvement program allowed the addition of bathrooms
adjacent to the narthex, a larger choir room, and a dining hall.
.
Today many of the original charter members and their descendants are still
a vital part of the congregation. We encourage you to join us today
and help make a new chapter in the ministry of Hidenwood Presbyterian Church.
